No Buy Challenge is ON ✨
This isn’t going to be another New Year’s resolution that fades away. I’m starting now, before the new year begins, to erase that “NY resolutions don’t work” label away.
There are a few things I want to change about myself, and one of the simplest — but still impactful — is to stop buying clothes and accessories for myself without truly a need.
🙋♀️ Have you ever tried a “no-buy” challenge? Did you succeed? If you have any advice or story to share, please leave a comment below, thanks!
I don’t shop excessively, but every year I still end up buying new clothes, accessories, or shoes. And every year, I take items to donation stores like kringloop shops here in the Netherlands (second-hand stores that accept used items to resell). I like to think that these clothes — some of which I’ve never even worn — will find a new home and be used for years to come. But let’s be honest: “away” is still “away.” Once those items leave our hands, we don’t really know where they end up. And if not same year, they eventually will end their journey in a landfill somewhere, out of sight and out of mind. But this is a whole another topic… 😞
Coming back to my buying habits (that I do believe are shared with lots of other ladies). Simple questions to ask:
- Do I need new clothes? — No.
- Do I struggle to decide what to wear in the morning? — Yes.
- But is that because I lack options? — No. It’s because I struggle to like myself.
It’s really not about what I own already. This challenge isn’t about fixing my style or my wardrobe — it’s about fixing my relationship with myself. I need to learn self-love, and once I do, the clothes won’t matter as much.
Here’s my plan 👉 I’ll allow myself only 2 items for the entire next year. These must be very specific, truly essential, and from sustainable brands. They should be pieces I can wear and cherish for years. But even better if I don’t use that allowance at all. No more buying.
So, here it is: my commitment to a no-buy challenge. I’ll share my progress as I go, and this post is my contract with myself. Now that it’s out there, I’m accountable. Let’s see where this journey takes me.
Thank you for staying with me until these words ❤️ Do good, open your heart, believe in miracles ✨
